Jitka Kotalova's anthropological study 'Belonging to Others : Coultural Construction of Womenhood in a Village in Bangladesh' examines how womanhood is symbolically constructed within a Muslim peasant community. In Bangladesh's patriarchal, patrilocal, and patrilineal society, cultural values enforce gender segregation, a strict division of labor, and male supremacy. Marriage functions as an exchange where women gain protection in return for ensuring the continuity of patrilines, making them transferable between households. This leaves women in an ambiguous position, with their sense of belonging divided between their fathers' and husbands' homes.

The study asks fundamental questions: How does a society that keeps women invisible and silent construct womanhood from birth to marriage? How is women's sense of belonging organized and reproduced across cultural domains when they are veiled and ritually excluded from public life? What cultural provisions exist for expressing muted, non-dominant views? And how do women assimilate into a structure that subordinates them? Kotalova attempts to answer these questions through careful ethnographic analysis, offering insight into the complex social dynamics that shape women's lives in rural Bangladesh.
