Governance and The Governed: Democracy and Development in Bangladesh' grew out of the third and fourth International Bangladesh Development Initiative (BDI) Conferences, held at the University of California, Berkeley in 2013 and 2015. The volume is organized around two broad themes: politics and government, and gender and development. The first section offers analytical perspectives on political regime transformation, identity complexities, and the causes and consequences of pre-election violence. It also examines the link between remittances and local democracy, the influence of politics on economic matters, and Bangladesh's position within South Asia.
The second part turns to human rights, with essays on childhood exposure to violence and the state's duty to protect female litigants in domestic disputes. Cultural and anthropological readings of patriarchy, the struggles of the urban poor in accessing affordable housing, and state failures in this area are also explored. The collection brings together diverse scholarly voices, making it a valuable resource for academics, students, and anyone interested in the interplay of democracy, development, and governance in Bangladesh.
