Giasuddin Ahmed Choudhury's 'Storm Surges in Bangladesh' tackles a harsh reality: cyclones from the Bay of Bengal have battered the country for centuries, and Bangladesh remains the world's worst sufferer in terms of human casualties. Most of the destruction comes not from the winds but from the storm surges these cyclones generate, and since cyclones cannot be prevented, the only option is learning to live with them.
This book digs into the science behind those surges, using a numerical model called the CEGIS Storm Surge Model (CSSM) that connects the northern Bay of Bengal with three coastal rivers. The model helps examine how meteorological, hydrological, oceanographic, astronomical, and geo-morphological factors each contribute to surges, and how these forces interact. Choudhury also touches on how climate change and rising sea levels might affect future surges, closing with a rundown of the cyclones that have historically struck Bangladesh.
The writing is technical but accessible, aimed at researchers, students, and policymakers. Even with better preparedness programs in place, the author argues, we still barely understand this 'enemy' phenomenon. The book is a serious step toward changing that.
