Bangladesh Promise and Performance

Bangladesh Promise and Performance is a comprehensive scholarly assessment of the nation's first three decades, examining how far it has lived up to the vision of a "Sonar Bangla," or Golden Bengal. The volume brings together leading social scientists from Bangladesh, America, and Europe to offer a balanced evaluation of the country's journey since 1971. The contributors analyze the political system, economic performance, and the social complexities arising from the Bengali people's multiple identities. Key chapters examine the impact of Islam on politics and women's rights, the treatment of minorities, and the mixed economic record. The book also explores profound social changes, including the rise of the garment industry, falling fertility rates, and the emergence of a new business class. This collection serves as a vital textbook for students of Bangladesh and South Asian studies.
