A List Of Offences

Dilruba Z. Ara's novel 'A List Of Offences' begins with the birth of Daria, a much-longed-for daughter whose unusual silvery hair, the color of sunlight on a river, is seen as a bad omen by the midwife. This single event sparks a wave of gossip that follows Daria throughout her childhood in the village of Gulab Ganga, where every small mistake she makes is magnified by the neighbors. Her father, Azad Chaudhury, hopes to secure her future by arranging a marriage with a local admirer, but Daria falls in love with Ali Baba, a young lawyer from Chittagong. After their marriage, she moves to his family home, 'Baba Lodge', where she must navigate the peculiarities of her new family, including her mother-in-law's bitterness and her sister-in-law's strange attachment to her brother. As Daria struggles to find her place, she realizes that even the birth of her daughter Jhinuk cannot bridge the distance between her and Ali Baba. Ultimately, she decides to return to her village, determined to protect her child from a life she no longer wants. The story is told through a series of chapters with evocative titles like 'A Bottle of River Water' and 'A Silver Fish in a Fisherman's Net'.
