Witness to Surrender

Siddiq Salik's 'Witness to Surrender' is an authoritative account of the dramatic events of 1971 in South Asia. As a uniquely privileged observer in Dhaka throughout that fateful year, Salik witnessed the political and human drama that led to the Indo-Pakistan war and the creation of Bangladesh. His two years as a prisoner of war gave him time to analyze the complex circumstances behind the high drama.

The book opens with a comprehensive overview of the political turbulence of the period, then presents what was the first detailed professional account of the war ever published. The narrative is dispassionate in tone and firmly anchored in fact. Salik was born in a remote village of Pakistan, and his personal perspective adds depth to this historical narrative.

For anyone interested in the history of the Bangladesh Liberation War and the geopolitical dynamics of 1971, this book remains an essential and insightful read.
